How to Figure Wallpaper

Wallpaper goes up in vertical strips, so count strips rather than square feet. Each strip is the wall height plus trimming and the pattern repeat, so the pattern lines up with the strip next to it. Divide the roll length by the strip length (dropping any leftover) to get strips per roll, and divide the wall width by the roll width to get the strips you need.

Strip length = wall height + pattern repeat + 4″ trim
Strips per roll = ⌊roll length ÷ strip length⌋   Strips needed = ⌈wall width ÷ roll width⌉
Rolls = ⌈strips needed ÷ strips per roll⌉ + extra

Tips

A pattern repeat can waste a lot of paper: the bigger the repeat, the fewer strips each roll gives. Buy all rolls from the same batch (run or lot number), since colors vary between batches. Paper over small windows and cut them out rather than subtracting them; only skip full-height openings like doors. In the U.S., wallpaper is often priced per single roll but sold in double rolls, so check which the price refers to.
