How to Calculate Engine Displacement

Displacement is the volume every piston sweeps from the bottom of its stroke to the top, added up for all cylinders.

Displacement = π ÷ 4 × bore² × stroke × cylinders
Cubic inches × 16.387 = cubic centimeters   Liters = cc ÷ 1,000   1 liter = 61.024 cubic inches

Tips

Boring an engine over (for example 0.030″ or 0.060″) and fitting a longer-stroke crank are the two ways to add displacement; stroke adds displacement in direct proportion, bore by its square. Marketing names are often rounded: Chevrolet's "5.7" small-block is 5.74 L.
