How to Calculate Cost of Goods Sold

Everything you had at the start plus everything you bought was available to sell. Whatever is still on the shelf at the end wasn't sold, so the rest is the cost of goods sold.

COGS = beginning inventory + purchases − ending inventory
Gross profit = revenue − COGS   Inventory turnover = COGS ÷ average inventory

Worked Example

Tips

Value inventory the same way at the start and end of the period (FIFO, LIFO or average cost). For manufacturers, COGS also includes direct labor and factory overhead.
