How to Calculate Percent Change

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. A positive result is an increase and a negative result is a decrease.

Percent change = (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100

Worked Example

Tips

Percent change has a direction: it always uses the starting value as the base. If neither number is the "start" (comparing two stores' prices), use the percent difference calculator instead. A change in a rate (4% to 5%) is 1 percentage point but a 25% increase.
