How to Calculate Net Profit

Net profit is what's left after every expense: cost of goods, operating costs, depreciation, interest and taxes. Each step down the income statement has its own margin.

Gross profit = revenue − cost of goods sold
Operating profit (EBIT) = gross profit − operating expenses − depreciation
Net profit = EBIT − interest − income tax   Net margin = net profit ÷ revenue

Tips

Use the same period for every number (a month, quarter or year). The tax line uses one flat rate for illustration; real business taxes depend on the entity type and state.
