How to Find a Square Root

The square root of x is the number that, multiplied by itself, gives x. Every positive number has two square roots (+ and −); the √ symbol means the positive one.

√x × √x = x   √(a × b) = √a × √b   √x = x^(1/2)

Perfect squares to know: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144. Negative numbers have no real square root; in complex numbers √−9 = 3i.
