How to Round Numbers

Find the digit in the place you are rounding to, then look at the next digit to the right. If it is 5 or more, round up; if it is less than 5, leave the digit alone. Drop everything after.

Worked Example

Tips

"Round half up" (away from zero for negatives) is what most schools teach. Banker’s rounding sends exact halves to the nearest even digit to avoid bias in long sums; Excel’s ROUND uses half up and many programming languages use half even. Negative numbers: ceiling rounds toward +∞, floor toward −∞.
