Data Transfer Rate Converter

Convert internet speeds in Mbps and Gbps to download speeds in MB/s, and between bits, bytes and binary units.

Decimals, fractions (3 1/2) and e-notation (1.5e6) all work.

How to Convert Data Transfer Rate Units

Network speeds are quoted in bits per second; downloads and file sizes use bytes. There are 8 bits in a byte, so divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s.

MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8   Mbps = MB/s × 8   MiB/s = Mbps × 10⁶ ÷ 8 ÷ 1,048,576

Factors follow NIST Special Publication 811, Appendix B. "Exact" means the unit is defined as that value; results are rounded only for display.

Tips

Real downloads usually run 5% to 10% below the line rate because of protocol overhead. A 500 Mbps plan tops out near 62.5 MB/s.
