How Much Water Do You Need?

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine set an adequate intake for total water (from all drinks and food) of about 3.7 liters a day for men and 2.7 liters for women, 3.0 liters in pregnancy and 3.8 liters while breastfeeding. Food typically supplies about 20%.

Tips

Needs rise with heat, exercise and illness; thirst is a good guide for most healthy people. The exercise add-on here is a rough rule of thumb. People with kidney, heart or liver conditions may need to limit fluids; follow a clinician’s advice.
