How Roman Numerals Work
I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1,000
Write the largest values first and add. Six subtractive pairs replace four-in-a-row: IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400) and CM (900). No symbol repeats more than three times, which is why standard numerals stop at 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX).
Worked Example
Tips
Clock faces often use IIII for 4, and larger numbers were written with a bar over a numeral to multiply by 1,000; this page sticks to the standard form and tells you if an input isn’t standard.
