Is a Balance Transfer Worth It?

A balance transfer card moves your balance to a new card with a low promotional rate, usually for a fee of 3% to 5% of the amount moved. It pays off when the interest you avoid is bigger than the fee, and works best if you clear the balance before the promo ends.

Transfer fee = balance × fee %, added to the new balance
Payment to clear the promo balance in time = (balance + fee) ÷ promo months (at 0%)

The page simulates both paths month by month with the same payment: staying on your current card, or transferring and paying the promo rate, then the regular rate on anything left.

Tips

New purchases on the transfer card may not get the promo rate, and a late payment can end the promo early. Transfers usually must happen within a set window after opening the card. Don't close the old card right away if it hurts your credit utilization.
